Day 1 in Bogota

We made it to Bogota safe and sound. Our flight got in at about 9:00pm and it was 10:30pm before we figured out immigration, customs and getting our luggage. When we got to our driver, he looked a little pale...let's just say he has a car about the size of a Geo Metro and we had 4 large suitcases, 2 carry-on suitcases, 2 backpacks and a small double stroller. We got it all in...but it was tight! His poor girlfriend had to sit in the front seat with a big piece of luggage in her lap.

We got to our hotel (Hotel Paris, Jodi!!) at about 11:30pm. After a long day of travel and being anxious and nervous, we went up to our room to find out it is about the size of our master bedroom at home with a full size bed, 2 twin size beds and a crib. Yikes, Rhett and I just sat on the bed and laughed. When we met with the owner of the hotel this morning, she said she is going to move us into a larger room but they had some water problems with the bathroom. It is fixed but she needs to get the room cleaned. Really hoping that happens before we get the kids on Wed. So, I started to unpack this morning and then she told us that so we still have a lot in the suitcases.

This morning we went for a walk to the mall and checked out what else was around our hotel. We have met some very nice people here at our hotel.

On a less positive note, we got a call this morning from our social worker and she said that Juan has not been feeling well and they may have to take out his adenoids. Right now, that is all the information we have which I feel so bad for him, but we know he is in great hands. We will keep you posted as we hear more on that.

There is one regret I have through this whole process...I wish I would have kept up with my 3 years of Spanish in high school. I thought I knew some words, but when you are trying to communicate, for some reason, please and thank you are even hard for me to remember!!! :)

Thanks for all the emails and messages.
Holly

At least there is no time zone switch. Caveman speak usually works for me when I travel to places where I only know a handful of words. Hope Juan feels better without having to go through surgery. How's the food?

Thanks Holly for pointing out where you are :) I did finally figure it out when I saw your links :) I must have been thinking of a different room because we had the one straight ahead at the top of the stairs which is very good sized, I thought "DANG! They must have one huge master bedroom =)

It will proabably surprise you the words that will come back to you OR maybe not. :) That is my biggest regret- not being able to hold conversations with people that you meet who want to share so much with you!

Sorry to hear about Juan :( Know that they will take excellent care of him but man, what bummer timing for everyone :( Will they still place the other two with you? I know when they were concerned with Ava that they would not present her til she was 100% checked out! Good for the care they give BUT hard on the parent's hearts!

Thinking of you! Big hugs and my shopping list is in the making. :) HA like you will be able to bring anything home with you! Jodi

Hi Holly--
I am so glad you made it safe and sound. I look forward to reading your posts each day. They are so fun and upbeat! This blog will be such a wonderful keepsake for the kids. As you are describing the room, I laugh, because Rob and I felt the same way when we went for just Maria! Then, we went through that initial shock each time after that. The advice there is: Don't stay in your room...get out and explore. I know right where you are and when you describe going to the mall, I am have so much fun invisioning your walk and what you might be seeing. (I must say, I feel really jealous)

Anyway--enjoy your day tomorrow. One more day and wow, how life is going to change!

So much fun to hear about your first day/experience in Colombia. Life there is truly like no other place! And it sounds like you are taking it all in. We loved the room situation there too. Even the biggest room can feel small after it becomes your "house" for several weeks, so I agree...get out when you can. Bogota has wonderful parks/playgrounds on almost every block. And we could always find an excuse to get out and try the yummy food and ice cream there. :)
We'll be thinking of you guys these next days, and praying that Juan's little body heals soon.
Take care!

So glad to hear you made it safe and sound! We were all thinking about you last night at volleyball. I am sure everything will go just fine with Juan. If it makes you feel better, it is a procedure we do multiple times a day here at the hospital. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Chad will be happy to know that a car the size of a Geo served you well. :) Too bad it wasn't a blue Geo - you could have prepared the kids and told them that their crazy neighbor has a car just like that. :)

Happy to hear you made it safely and all is going well. Hope you get that bigger room!

Miss ya!
